Need a creative break? This post is for you. This is a part of YAY’s #forgoodnessmake series.

For those in the eastern and midwestern United States, the autumn foliage right now is on fire. I can’t help but see the bounty of fallen leaves as a creative opportunity. I’m sure I can thank Andy Goldsworthy for that!

This challenge is a simple one:

  1. Go out into the wide world. Your yard or neighborhood will do!
  2. Collect found objects, picking up fallen elements that intrigue you. Leaves of various shapes and colors. Twigs. Berries. Shells. Stones. *Be respectful of habitats.
  3. Now, make the objects into something new! A collage, a sculpture, a sketch.
  4. Share a photo on instagram or twitter and tag it #forgoodnessmake

Here’s an example of a nature collage I made a few years back:
A gradient wreath from leaves collected on a walk around my neighborhood.

A variety of leaves arranged in a wreath shape

Another example:
A leaf becomes a turban for a stately lion in this sketch.

A yellow leaf paired with a pencil sketch of a lion so that the leaf looks like a turban

Don’t feel limited by these examples! Look to nature for your inspiration. What can you make with found objects? Can you combine drawing with natural elements in an interesting way? Build something that says NEATURE!

And please share photos. Can’t wait to see what you come up with!
